Facts about Mina City

Mina is a valley 7 km east of Makkah where Hajj pilgrims stay overnight on 8th, 11th, 12th and some even on 13th Dhu’al Hijjah. More than 100,000 air-conditioned tents provide accommodation to the pilgrims during Hajj which is why, it is also known as the tent city. The tents are Teflon-coated to withstand the high heat and other extreme climatic conditions. There are separate tents for men and women. Mina also contains Jamarat, the three stone pillars which are pelted with stones, signifying the stoning of the devil during the Hajj pilgrimage. 
Mina is also referenced in Surah Baqarah in the Quran:

“And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered.” [2:203]
